In this article, you’ll learn how to stay connected via mobile data while traveling through different countries. What used to be a challenge a few years ago has become much simpler thanks to eSIM technology. With eSIM providers like Airalo, Nomad and others, you can stay connected easily and conveniently wherever you are. And if your phone doesn’t support eSIM, eSIM.me has got you covered.
What are eSIMs?
eSIM stands for “embedded SIM,” a SIM card built into your smartphone. Unlike traditional SIM cards that you physically insert into your device, eSIMs are integrated into the device and can be digitally programmed. This allows for quicker and easier activation of new mobile plans as you move between regions. The advantages are clear:
- No more fiddling with tiny SIM cards or worrying about losing them. Plus, you won’t need a phone with a dual-SIM slot anymore.
- When you arrive in a new country, you won’t need to find a store, sign a contract, and buy a local SIM card. Instead, you can load the right plan onto your device before you leave. (Keep in mind that eSIM activation requires an online connection, so you’ll need Wi-Fi access for this. For instance, in Shanghai, it was a bit tricky, but I got directions at the info desk on how to access Wi-Fi at Shanghai Pudong Airport.)
- You can save different mobile plans for various countries or regions and switch between them as needed. I’ve also replaced my home provider’s (O2) SIM card with an eSIM for convenience.
How to get an eSIM and mobile data
The process is similar across most providers. I’ve used Airalo and Nomad (other providers include the eSIM.me Marketplace, Ubigi, BetterRoaming, and Gigsky). I couldn’t use my phone’s hotspot with a Nomad mobile plan, so here’s a guide for using Airalo:
- Download and sign up on the Airalo app.
- Select the appropriate data plan for your destination.
- Scan the QR code (take a picture with another device) or manually enter the data.
- Activate the plan before departure or during a layover at the airport (over Wi-Fi, turn off mobile data).
Local and regional eSIMs
Local eSIMs offer data plans for a specific country. If you’re traveling through multiple countries quickly, which is often the case on tours, regional eSIMs are a great alternative. You can buy one eSIM that works across Europe or Southeast Asia, for example.
Your phone isn’t eSIM-compatible?
That’s the case for me too. I was thrilled to find the service from eSIM.me, where you can order a physical card that makes your smartphone eSIM-compatible. It worked perfectly for me. Simply insert the eSIM.me card into your SIM slot, download the eSIM.me app, and follow the activation instructions.
With the most affordable plan at €24.95 (net), you get up to five eSIM profiles on your smartphone, allowing you to have five different data plans simultaneously.
